The Berghoff is a Chicago restaurant that’s been around for over 100 years in the Loop. Among the modern skyscrapers of downtown, the Berghoff’s has always felt like a portal to another time or part of the world in my eyes. While this painting is of course a nod to all the memories and nostalgia associated with the Berghoff, my true intention for the piece was make the viewer acutely aware of time. Both of the passage of time over decades, but also that moment when the sun is setting and everything stands still for a moment and looks magical. That moment when suddenly you are seeing the world as a kid again, and not as the adult you are walking alone through a big city. For me, that’s the intended feeling of this piece.
